“Sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations.”
-American Psychology Association
The idea of sports psychology was first introduced to this country by Coleman Griffith at the University of Illinois in 1925, and the acknowledgement of sports psychology methods having a distinct positive effect on athletic performance has come a long way since that time. Today’s athletes value the mental approach to enhancing skills to increase overall performance.
