Questions Athletes should ask Themselves

If you watched the 2021 NFL Draft or any other previous draft you may have seen the emotion displayed by these athletes who have achieved their lifelong dream of being an NFL player. NFL players, both drafted and undrafted, have sacrificed a lot to be able to have an opportunity to play this game. The process for all of these athletes may have been different but I’m sure it wasn’t easy. A certain level of commitment, discipline, and self-understanding is needed in order to reach that level. If you are an athlete that hopes to reach this level of success then you need to begin thinking about your answers to these questions below.
  • What are your goals?
“A man is a goal seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals.” This famous quote comes from the legendary philosopher Aristotle. It highlights the importance of goal setting. If you want to be successful (even outside of football) then it is important to set goals and then create a plan to achieve those goals. If you are an athlete you need to set high but realistic goals and commit to them every day.

  • What is your “why?”
Why do you play Football? This is a question that can easily produce answers such as “because I love it” or “because it’s fun.” However, I challenge you to dig for a deeper answer. Think about why through the pain of potential losses, injuries, rigorous training, long days/nights, and pressure to succeed you still commit yourself to football. Players who know why they play this game have a heightened sense of clarity and motivation. Football can be challenging mentally and physically, but when these players think about quitting or taking a play off their “why” kicks in their head. You must know what your “why” is to be able to push through hard times.

  • What makes you different/special?
There are millions of football players around the world with hopes to one day make it to the NFL. The few who make it are considered the best of the best. You have to wonder and study “what makes them special?” What special trait do they possess that sets them apart from everyone else? Think outside the realm of just physical attributes because most of them are not the biggest, fastest, or strongest but they still managed to out-perform their competition. Is it their attention to detail, football IQ, natural instincts, strong competitive nature, etc? If your goal is to become a great player and make it to the NFL then you need to discover what makes you special. Identify what special trait you have that sets you apart from millions of others. Once you have identified what makes you different it is imperative that you continue to develop this trait and let it drive you to improve your other weaknesses.

Having the answer to these questions does not guarantee you'll get drafted and have a hall of fame career. However, knowing the answer to these questions will help you to push through those dog days of camp, build off those tough games, react positively to those setbacks, help you not get complacent with success, and drive you to continue to improve. These questions help you to understand what type of football player you are.
Nothing easy comes without hard work. This especially means grinding in the off-season!
