The Art of Being Coachable

Being coachable is the greatest attribute a player can have as an athlete, especially as a football player.  Being coachable can increase your playing time, build your coach’s trust, and improve your individual skills and knowledge of the game. Coaches do not expect their players to be perfect. However, they do expect their players to be willing to learn and not repeat the same mistakes. Players must be open to receiving the instructions on how to play and how to correct any mistakes.  As a player you must show your coachability in every situation, whether in the classroom, on the sideline, on the practice field, or during the game.  The primary purpose is to give coaches confidence in your ability to grow as a player.  Here are a few pointers to use that will let your coach see that you are coachable.

  • Listen Intently
Give your Coach your undivided attention so you will hear and absorb the instructions or corrective steps needed to perfect your game. Remember to pay attention to detail.  Give the coach your undivided attention and understand the “why” and “how” of their instructions.

  • Accept Criticism or Feedback
This is vital to a player’s personal growth, mental development, and athletic development.  Learn to accept “Constructive Criticism” from your Coach, who only wants you to be the best at your job for the team. For example, if the Coach tells you they don’t like your effort, listen intently, and accept that criticism or feedback as motivation to give more on that next play or rep.  Many players get on the defensive when they receive negative comments. This is the quickest way to lose your coaches' trust. Do NOT be this player!

  • Practice
Once you have listened and accepted the feedback, it is time for self-examination to see how you will implement the instructions and execute on the play or rep to make the corrections.  Use your own time before or after practice, watching film, or working with teammates to help you to improve.  This effort will lead to improvement and coaches will recognize your work.

  • Ask for help
If you follow these first 3 steps and still have not reached a level of improvement that your coach considers acceptable then ask for help.  Ask your coach, or a teammate for assistance.  Do not be too proud. Do not be afraid to ask. You will be respected for taking the time to seek extra coaching to improve.

Practice as if you are playing in game and
You will find that when playing a real game; the game seems to slows down.
